Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has been reported to the police for making provocative comments about Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This has caused a new political tempest.
The FIR was registered after Moitra allegedly told reporters in West Bengal’s Nadia district that Amit Shah’s “head should be cut off and placed on the table” since he didn’t stop illegal Bangladeshis from coming into India.
Moitra said what he did in reaction to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech on Independence Day, in which he talked about how infiltration may affect the population. Moitra asked why people are still getting across the borders, which are secured by forces from the Home Ministry. “When the PM said this, his Home Minister was in the front row and smiling,” she said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly and strongly condemned the statement. A number of BJP officials, including as Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, called the comments “objectionable” and “disgraceful” and called for action against the TMC politician.
Moitra went on X (previously Twitter) to defend herself, calling her statement a “metaphor” and saying that the BJP used its “troll cell” to make the issue “viral.” Kunal Ghosh, a member of her party, also defended her, saying that the comment was a symbolic expression and not meant to be taken literally.
A local BJP politician named Sandeep Majumdar is said to have filed a police report at the Kotwali police station in Krishnanagar, calling the comments “anti-nationalist.” The incident has made the political rivalry between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal much worse as the elections get closer.
