Washington [US]: Renowned Italian director and screenwriter Alice Rohrwacher has been selected to chair the Camera d’Or Jury at the 78th Festival de Cannes, scheduled to be held from May 13 to May 24, 2025.
The Camera d’Or (Golden Camera) is a prestigious award presented to the best first feature film showcased in the Official Selection, Critics’ Week, or the Directors’ Fortnight sections of the festival.
Rohrwacher, a celebrated voice in European cinema, will have the honor of recognizing a filmmaker’s debut at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2025, as reported by Deadline.
Rohrwacher said, “First times are always important, and they stay with us for the rest of our lives. Like entering an unfamiliar room, approaching one’s beloved for a first kiss, or landing on a foreign shore. There’s something golden that haloes these moments in our memory. Is that why the most prestigious award for first films is called Camera d’or?”
In 2024, the Camera d’Or was awarded to Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tondel for his debut feature Armand, which premiered under the Un Certain Regard category—a segment dedicated to showcasing unique and bold storytelling.
Rohrwacher’s cinematic journey began with her first feature, Heavenly Body (Corpo Celeste), which was presented at Directors’ Fortnight in 2011. Her second feature, The Wonders (Le Meraviglie), competed at the 2014 Festival de Cannes and went on to win the Grand Prix.
She also has a background in documentary filmmaking, having worked on acclaimed titles such as Checosamanca (2006), 9×10 Novanta (2014), and Futura (2021).
Rohrwacher’s appointment to head the Camera d’Or jury reflects Cannes’ continued commitment to celebrating bold new talent in cinema, as well as honoring filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the artform.
