New Delhi:
The FBI has revealed that it successfully foiled a potentially deadly New Year’s Eve terror attack in North Carolina, inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS). The agency said the coordinated effort of law enforcement authorities “undoubtedly saved lives.”
In a statement posted by FBI Charlotte on X, the bureau confirmed that the suspect was “directly inspired to act by ISIS.” FBI Director Kash Patel also acknowledged the efforts of partner agencies, stating, “Thanks to our great partners for working with us and undoubtedly saving lives.”
18-Year-Old Suspect Arrested
US Attorney Russ Ferguson confirmed during a press conference that an 18-year-old suspect, identified as Christian Sturdivant, has been arrested. Authorities said he had allegedly been planning the attack for nearly a year.
According to federal prosecutors, Sturdivant intended to carry out the assault using knives and hammers, and was preparing for what he referred to as “jihad”.
“He was preparing for jihad, and innocent people were going to die,” Ferguson said.
The suspect has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
On FBI Radar Since 2022
Court documents reveal that Sturdivant had been under FBI surveillance since January 2022, when he was still a minor. The FBI affidavit states he had been communicating with an ISIS operative based in Europe.
Investigators said he reportedly received instructions to dress in black and commit random violent attacks using a hammer.
Disturbing Evidence Seized
During a search of his residence, FBI agents allegedly discovered a handwritten document titled “New Year’s Attack 2026.”
The document reportedly detailed plans to stab up to 20 victims and then target responding police officers.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact target location to ensure ongoing security measures remain protected.
The investigation remains ongoing.
