Johannesburg [South Africa], January 11: South Africa batter and Jo’Burg Super Kings (JSK) captain Faf Du Plessis, approaching 41, discussed how he maintains peak performance as a cricketer at his age, ahead of JSK’s SA20 season 3 opener against MI Cape Town in Johannesburg this Saturday.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Du Plessis revealed that his approach to the game has evolved over the years, saying, “You have to evolve. Batting, for me, has evolved in the last three years. I keep trying to improve my own game, and the same goes for my training. It is not the same as what it used to be.”
The changes in Du Plessis’ game have certainly paid off. Over the last three years, he has scored more than 1,000 runs in T20s, including 4,105 runs from 127 matches at an average of 36.32, with four centuries and 32 fifties. His strike rate during this period exceeds 151. In 2023, he had a career-best year, amassing 1,502 runs at an average of 35.76 and a strike rate of 155.80, including one century and 14 fifties in 46 innings.
Despite his extensive involvement in multiple leagues, Du Plessis has maintained his fitness levels, staying in excellent shape. He credited his smarter approach to preparation, which allows him to stay aggressive during games. “I understand my body better. There’s a misconception that you need to do a lot to be fit, but I believe it’s more about consistency and using time wisely,” he explained.
Reflecting on the changes that come with age, Du Plessis shared that he now pays closer attention to recovery practices. “When you’re younger, you don’t stretch or worry about recovery, but now things like ice baths, nutrition, and proper sleep make a big difference. Hamstrings require different training at this age, and recovery is crucial. I can’t do what I did in my younger days and expect the same results,” he said.
Du Plessis, who continues to look for ways to stay competitive, concluded, “You have to evolve, but it’s great. It drives me to look for those one percenters, to remain competitive and challenge younger athletes.”
As JSK gets ready for its season opener, Du Plessis’ commitment to evolving both his game and fitness remains a key factor in his continued success.
