MANCHESTER, UK— India showed amazing strength by batting for 143 overs in their second innings to get a great draw in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
This brave act is only the third time in Test history that India has batted for more than 140 overs in the third innings to rescue a match after giving up a lead of 300 or more in the first innings. The last time was against New Zealand (476/4 in 180 overs, Napier, 2009) and the time before that was against England itself (318/4 in 148 overs, Lord’s, 1979).
Ravindra Jadeja (107) and Washington Sundar (101) both scored hundreds, which helped India come back. The two of them stayed unbeaten at the crease at the end of Day 5, accumulating an amazing 203 runs for the fifth wicket.
India’s second innings did not go well at all. England took a huge 311-run lead in the first innings (669 runs to India’s 358). India then lost both of their openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, for ducks in the first over. This made India the third team in Test history to score more than 400 runs after losing their opening two wickets without scoring a run.
Ben Stokes was selected Player of the Match because he played so well in all areas. He took five wickets in the second innings and scored a great hundred in England’s first innings. This was his second Player of the Match honor in a row in the series.
Even though England was in a good position, they didn’t get any wickets in the latter two sessions of Day 5. They did get the key wickets of Indian captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul in the opening session.
The draw at Old Trafford is especially important for India since it’s the first time in 35 years that they have been able to get a draw at this famous place. The last time was in 1990.
In a short score, India scored 358 and 425/4 (Ravindra Jadeja 107*, Shubman Gill 103, Chris Woakes 2/67), while England scored 669 (Joe Root 150, Ben Stokes 141, Ravindra Jadeja 4/143).
