Exiled MQM Leader Altaf Hussain Urges PM Modi To Speak Against “Genocide” Of Mohajirs In Pakistan

In a rare and emotionally charged address streamed via TikTok, exiled Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain made a direct appeal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders, urging them to break their silence on what he described as “systematic state atrocities” and “genocide” committed against the Mohajir community in Pakistan.

Altaf Hussain, who has lived in exile in the UK since the 1990s, condemned Pakistan’s political and military establishment for decades of abuse against Mohajirs—descendants of Urdu-speaking Muslims who migrated from India to Pakistan during the 1947 Partition. He said Mohajirs are often labeled as “traitors” and “Indian spies” by the establishment simply for their origins and identity.

The campaign of state-sponsored violence against Mohajirs, which began with military operations launched on June 19, 1992, remains ongoing. Our people continue to face harassment, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and systemic discrimination,” said Hussain.

Hussain made a plea for support to Prime Minister Modi, invoking the shared history, culture, and heritage of the Mohajirs with India. He noted that their ancestors lived in India for centuries, and those who chose Pakistan at the time of Partition now find themselves “punished for that very decision.”

India gave land, dignity, and opportunity to those who stayed. But the Mohajirs who moved to Pakistan are being systematically erased. Please show us the same compassion. We are your people too,” he said in an emotional appeal.

Calling for international advocacy, Hussain stressed that India’s growing global stature gives it the moral and strategic leverage to speak out.

India is on the brink of becoming a superpower. Use that strength to speak up for the voiceless. Your voice holds sway in the world. Let it echo for the Mohajirs,” he urged.

Altaf Hussain’s message also called on all Indian political leaders, civil society, and media to raise awareness about the plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan and highlight their suffering on the global stage.

The MQM founder’s renewed call comes amidst increased international scrutiny of human rights abuses in Pakistan, especially concerning minorities, ethnic groups, and dissidents. His statement marks one of the strongest direct appeals by a prominent South Asian political figure to India for moral intervention based on shared Partition-era legacies.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Indian government regarding Altaf Hussain’s appeal. However, his comments are likely to fuel debate in both countries about historical justice, human rights, and the unfinished business of Partition.
