European Envoys Light Candles To Mark Third Anniversary Of Russia-Ukraine War; Zelenskyy Calls For NATO Membership

Kyiv [Ukraine]: Envoys from several European countries gathered on Saturday to light candles in a poignant show of solidarity with Ukraine, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The ceremony also featured a photo exhibition highlighting the resilience of the Ukrainian people over the past three years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commemorated the solemn occasion, paying tribute to the nation’s defenders. “Three years of absolute heroism by our people. Eternal memory to all who stood up in defense of our state and our people, giving their lives so that Ukraine may live. Eternal gratitude to the fallen heroes—the gratitude of Ukraine, the gratitude of all free nations,” Zelenskyy said.

As diplomatic efforts continue, US and Russian diplomats are slated to meet next week, following discussions in Riyadh between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Ahead of the upcoming talks, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s desire for NATO membership, calling it the “most cost-effective option” to prevent future conflicts. “If Ukraine does not join NATO, we will have to create NATO within Ukraine—maintaining a strong army, financing it, producing our own weapons, and securing security guarantees with our partners,” Zelenskyy stated on X.

He emphasized the importance of comprehensive security measures encompassing military, economic, and political guarantees, adding, “We need to weigh everything—what is cheaper, what is more realistic, and what can be done faster. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine in our work toward real security.”

The anniversary comes amid ongoing diplomatic maneuvers and renewed appeals for international support as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
