Europe Swelters Under First Major Heatwave Of Summer 2025; Temperatures Soar To 42°C

Madrid [Spain]: Europe is facing its first major heatwave of the summer with temperatures soaring to 42°C (107.6°F), triggering widespread weather alerts and health warnings across multiple countries. As the fastest-warming continent, Europe is once again experiencing the brunt of the global climate emergency.

🔥 Spain:

The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet has issued a special heat advisory, predicting extreme heat particularly in the southern regions. The public has been warned about persistent high temperatures both day and night, posing risks especially to the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.

Madrid’s health ministry has advised citizens to stay indoors during peak heat, keep hydrated, and look after vulnerable individuals.

🔥 Portugal:

Two-thirds of Portugal will be on high alert Sunday as temperatures hit 42°C, especially in Lisbon, raising fears of forest fires. Authorities have increased emergency preparedness as dry, windy conditions add to the risk.

🔥 France:

In Marseille, where temperatures neared 40°C, the local government responded by making public swimming pools free, providing much-needed relief from the Mediterranean blaze.

🔥 Italy:

Seventeen major Italian cities from Milan to Palermo are under red alert, with Rome recording 39°C. The unbearable heat drove tourists to the city’s 2,500 fountains, while emergency teams remain on high watch.

🔥 Greece:

In Greece, extreme heat nearing 40°C sparked wildfires south of Athens. Authorities ordered evacuations and closed down coastal roads, including access to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, a key tourist site.

🔥 Germany:

Germany braces for what could be its hottest day of the year with expected highs near 40°C. Already, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler recorded 35.7°C, with more records set to fall.

The German Weather Service (DWD) issued heat alerts across the country, particularly in Baden-Württemberg, where level 2 and 3 warnings were issued. With nighttime temperatures remaining above 20°C, the nation is experiencing tropical nights—increasing health and infrastructure strain.

🌍 A Warming Planet:

This intense heatwave follows Europe’s hottest March on record, as tracked by the EU Copernicus Climate Change Service. Climate scientists continue to warn that such extreme weather events—including heatwaves, floods, hurricanes, and droughts—will only become more frequent and severe due to the planet’s rising temperature.

With record-breaking temperatures, strained emergency services, and rising public health concerns, the current European heatwave serves as another stark reminder of the climate crisis impacting millions across the continent.
