Eric Garcetti Bids Farewell As US Ambassador To India, Reflects On Deep Bonds Between Nations

Eric Garcetti, the outgoing US Ambassador to India, shared a heartfelt farewell, reflecting on the profound connections forged during his tenure as the 26th US envoy. In a touching video message on social media, Garcetti expressed his admiration for India, a country he has cherished since childhood.

“My dear India: you’re not just incredible–you’re unforgettable. With love, Eric,” he posted.

Cherished Memories in India

Garcetti described India as a second home, recounting his extensive travels and the friendships he built.
“From the moment I landed in New Delhi to serve as the 26th U.S. Ambassador, India has felt like home,” he said. “Your people’s dosti and zindadili touch me every day.”

During his tenure, he visited 28 states, embracing India’s cultural diversity. From floating past the Ghats of Varanasi and crossing Meghalaya’s living root bridges to sailing Kerala’s backwaters and cheering for the Indian cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Garcetti immersed himself in India’s heritage.

“I’ve seen that fusion of ancient royalty and modern innovation in Hyderabad, celebrated the culture of Kolkata, and explored the history of Chennai’s ancient temples,” he added. He also highlighted the opening of the US consulate in Bengaluru, calling it a “new beginning in Bangalore.”

Milestones in US-India Relations

Garcetti highlighted significant achievements during his term, including:

  • Collaboration on vaccine distribution.
  • Shared advancements in technology.
  • The inauguration of the US consulate in Bengaluru, the fifth US mission in India.
  • Strengthened ties in trade, defense, and education.

“We’ve seen our businesses trade together, our guardians train together, and our people celebrate together,” he reflected.

He praised the shared aspirations of both nations, describing the American and Indian dreams as “flip sides of the same coin.”

Enduring Legacy and Optimism

As he concluded his tenure, Garcetti expressed his love for India and optimism for the future of US-India relations. “India, you have my heart,” he said.

Garcetti acknowledged India’s impact on his life, calling it a place where humanity bridges the past and glimpses the future. “I will always deeply love America, where I was born. But India has been a place where I’ve learned to embrace life in full color.”

Ending on a cinematic note, he quoted a famous Bollywood dialogue from Om Shanti Om:
“Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost!”
