03 Aug, 2025: England are in a strong position on Day 4 of the fifth Test at The Oval, as they continue their pursuit of a record-breaking 374-run target. At the time of this update, England have reached 208/3 after 47 overs, needing another 166 runs to win. The partnership between Joe Root and Harry Brook has been instrumental, with the duo putting on a century stand to frustrate the Indian bowlers.
Brook, in particular, has been aggressive, reaching a quick-fire half-century. His innings was aided by a crucial fielding error from India’s Mohammed Siraj, who mishandled a catch near the boundary, turning a potential wicket into six runs for England.
Earlier in the day, India managed to get two breakthroughs in the first session, with Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, respectively. However, the momentum has since swung in England’s favor.
If England successfully chase down this target, it will not only secure a 3-1 series victory for the hosts but also mark the highest successful run chase ever at The Oval, surpassing the 263 runs chased by England against Australia in 1902.
The series is also being played for the newly introduced Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India, led by Shubman Gill, must win this Test to draw the series and retain the trophy.
