Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 26: The announcement of the Padma Bhushan award on Republic Day was a “bittersweet” moment for the family of late ghazal legend Pankaj Udhas, who was posthumously honored with the prestigious award.
Pankaj Udhas’ wife, Farida Udhas, and daughters, Nayaab and Reva Udhas, expressed a mix of pride and sorrow as they reflected on the music maestro’s achievements. Overcome with emotion, they remembered him on this significant occasion.
“It’s a matter of great pride for us, but it’s also very sad that he (Pankaj Udhas) is not here to receive this honor,” Farida Udhas shared.
Reva Udhas, his daughter, said, “We wish he were here to accept this award. He would have been so happy to see this. I thank the government for honoring my father with this recognition. He always gave his best to make India proud. He was passionate about his country, and through his music, he connected borders and helped put India on the global map.”
Nayaab Udhas, his elder daughter, also became emotional, noting that January 26 marked 11 months since her father’s passing. “It’s a bittersweet moment for us, as today marks 11 months since our father left us. We are incredibly proud of him. Although he isn’t here to witness this recognition, I’m grateful to the government and everyone who has acknowledged his work.”
Pankaj Udhas passed away on February 26, 2024, at the age of 72.
Udhas rose to fame in 1980 with his iconic ghazal album Aahat. He continued to enjoy success with albums like Mukarar (1981), Tarrannum (1982), Mehfil (1983), and many others. His timeless songs include hits like “Chitthi Aayi Hai,” “Chandani Raat Mein,” “Na Kajre Ki Dhaar,” “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,” “Ek Taraf Uska Ghar,” and “Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.”
