Renowned songwriter Camille, best known for her work on the score of Emilia Perez, has finally addressed the controversy surrounding the film’s Oscar campaign, stating that while the situation has been painful, it is important to confront it openly.
In an interview with Deadline, Camille expressed both relief and concern, acknowledging the strain the controversy has placed on the film’s cast and crew.
“It’s actually a relief to be able to talk about it, and it’s important to talk about these things,” Camille said, emphasizing the need to address the issue directly.
Social Media Backlash & Film’s Oscar Momentum
Emilia Perez had a strong start in the awards season, securing an impressive 13 nominations—a near record-breaking achievement.
However, the campaign took an unexpected hit when social media posts by lead actress Karla Sofia Gascon on platform X sparked backlash over their controversial nature.
Director Jacques Audiard responded swiftly, condemning the posts and clarifying that they did not reflect the values of the film’s team.

Echoing Audiard’s stance, Camille emphasized that the Emilia Perez team remains united in its opposition to any offensive speech.
“Inside the team, there’s no controversy about that—we all agree this is not possible,” Camille stated.
“Jacques has been very clear about it, and Zoe [Saldana]’s been very clear about it, and we were very clear about it,” she added.
Despite the negative attention, Camille reassured fans that the film’s creative vision and hard work remain the primary focus.

“We give all space to that campaign through the last week of meeting people, doing Q&As, and being back together in Los Angeles.”
