Elon Musk Launches ‘Macrohard,’ A New AI-Powered Software Company To Challenge Microsoft

Elon Musk is back in the news that his new business, “Macrohard,” is an AI-powered software company that will compete with Microsoft. Musk himself said on X (previously Twitter) that the moniker is a “tongue-in-cheek” jibe at the tech giant. This reflects his long-standing antagonism and criticism of the corporation.

Musk adds that the “Macrohard” project is “very real.” It is part of a bigger plan to make a software corporation that runs entirely on AI. This revolutionary idea aims to use AI to automate and simplify the whole software development process, from writing code to running it. Musk thinks that AI should be able to accomplish everything that software-based companies like Microsoft do because they don’t make physical hardware.

This news comes just a few weeks after Musk’s xAI company got the trademark for “Macrohard” from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The trademark application lists a wide range of AI-related products and services, such as software that can make fake human speech and text, as well as software that can help people develop and code video games using AI.

Musk has often talked about how he doesn’t get along with Microsoft. In a post on X in 2021, he coined the phrase “Macrohard >> Microsoft.” He brought this comment back up in July 2024 when Microsoft services went down over the world. This showed that he wanted to question the company’s reliability and market supremacy. The new business is intimately linked to xAI’s Colossus 2 supercomputer project, which is buying millions of Nvidia GPUs to fuel its advanced AI initiatives. This puts it in direct conflict with other AI giants like OpenAI and Meta.

The funny name of the new company is more than just a joke; it’s a purposeful attempt by Musk to shake up the software industry with a new business model. Macrohard is employing AI to build a company from the ground up, which puts it in a position to directly compete with Microsoft’s long-standing supremacy in the software market.
