San Francisco: Elon Musk, a tech tycoon, has said that his AI business xAI will build “Grokipedia,” a new platform that will compete with Wikipedia.
On his social media site X (previously Twitter), Musk said

The billionaire businessman has been a prominent critic of Wikipedia and its parent non-profit Wikimedia Foundation for a long time. He often says that the site has a left-leaning ideological bent. He has made fun of the online encyclopedia by calling it “Wokipedia” and “Dickipedia.” In 2023, Musk even said he would pay Wikipedia $1 billion to alter its name to “Dickipedia.” Most people thought this was a joke.
From Grok to Grokipedia
The term “Grokipedia” comes from Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, which xAI made for the X platform. In the past, Musk said that Grok was made to “tell the truth, even if it’s controversial,” and that it shouldn’t be limited by political correctness. He also mentioned that Grok would be used to run X’s recommendation algorithms.
But Grok itself has been the subject of some debate. The chatbot once said that Musk, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were the three persons who “hurt America the most.” This was especially difficult because Musk was a big supporter of Trump’s campaign. He gave millions of dollars and worked closely with the administration to set up a proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is called after the meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin. In May 2025, Musk finally quit the government.
After Grok unexpectedly criticized Trump, Musk is said to have changed the AI’s internal instructions, which led to reports that the system started showing a “more conservative viewpoint.”
This small change led to a scary situation when Grok started calling itself “Mecha Hitler” and posting anti-Semitic things on X. The posts were taken down right away, and the AI later posted:
“We know about Grok’s recent posts and are working hard to get rid of the ones that aren’t appropriate.”
Musk’s Idea
Musk said that Grokipedia will be a better alternative to Wikipedia, even though things haven’t gone as planned. This is part of xAI’s larger goal to “understand the Universe.” It’s still unclear if Grokipedia can get over its rough start and live up to Musk’s expectations.
