New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a fresh statement addressing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent “vote chori” (vote theft) claims. In its response on Friday, the poll body firmly stated that “no deletion of any vote can be done online.”
The ECI explained that while voters can submit Form 7 online to request the deletion of an entry from a constituency, the submission of the form does not lead to an automatic deletion. Each application is subject to a rigorous verification process.
The commission cited a specific case in the Aland constituency of Karnataka to illustrate its point. The ECI reiterated that a total of 6,018 applications for deletion were submitted online in Aland, but a thorough investigation found that only 24 of them were genuine.
The statement also confirmed that the Electoral Officer of the Aland constituency filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the fraudulent applications in February 2023. The investigation was subsequently handed over by the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka to the Superintendent of Police of the Kalaburgi district.
