The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the appointment of two additional secretaries from central ministries as observers for the upcoming vice presidential election. The election is scheduled to be held on September 9.
Sushil Kumar Lohani, who serves as the Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and D. Anandan, the Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Finance, have been named as the official observers. The ECI also placed Nitin Kumar Shivdas Khade, a Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Rural Development, on a reserve list.
The appointment was made by the Election Commission using its constitutional powers to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the election. The contest for the Vice President of India is between the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan, and the opposition’s pick, B. Sudarshan Reddy.
The observers are tasked with overseeing the electoral process, monitoring for any violations, and ensuring that all procedures are followed in accordance with the law.
