NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made the formal announcement on when the next Vice President of India would be elected. The announcement comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar quit as Vice President on July 22, 2025, leaving the office empty.
The ECI’s precise timeline says that the election process would start with the official announcement on August 7, 2025. Candidates who want to run will have until August 21 to turn in their nominations. following a day to look over the nomination papers on August 22, the final list of candidates will be made following the deadline for withdrawals on August 25.
If needed, the voting will happen on September 9, and the votes will be counted and the results will be made public on the same day.
The Vice President is chosen by an electoral college made up of all the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, both elected and appointed. State legislative assembly members do not vote in the vice-presidential election, unlike the presidential election. A single transferable vote and a secret ballot are used to conduct the election under a form of proportional representation.
This election is happening because Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, leaving a vacancy that needs to be filled. His term was supposed to finish more than two years ago. Dhankhar was the 14th Vice President of India and also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The election date changed quickly, which is in conformity with the constitution’s requirement to fill the vacancy as soon as practicable.
Political parties are now supposed to start choosing their candidates. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is in power, has a strong majority in the electoral college, therefore its nominee is certain to win.
