ECI Launches Special Voter Roll Revision In Bihar, Moves To Delist 345 Defunct Political Parties

New Delhi [India], June 30: As Bihar gears up for its upcoming state assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls to ensure accuracy and inclusivity in the voter list.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the key aim of the SIR is to ensure that no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible name remains on the rolls. To support this effort, over one lakh volunteers have been deployed to assist vulnerable groups, including the elderly, sick, persons with disabilities (PwD), and marginalized communities, in filling out Enumeration Forms.

“The objective is to avoid any ‘illegible’ voter and ensure full inclusion in the electoral process,” Kumar said.

In parallel, the ECI has initiated action against 345 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) across India for failing to meet the mandatory condition of contesting elections for six consecutive years since 2019. Many of these parties were found to be non-traceable at their registered addresses, prompting a nationwide verification drive.

According to the ECI, of the over 2,800 RUPPs registered in India, a significant number have not fulfilled the basic eligibility requirements for continued registration. The delisting process aims to clean up the electoral system and remove inactive political entities.

The Bihar assembly elections are scheduled for later this year, and the commission is intensifying efforts to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
