In a big turn of events in the Durgapur medical college rape case, the police in West Bengal have arrested the survivor’s buddy. This brings the total number of individuals in custody to six.
A second-year MBBS student from Odisha was implicated in the event. She had traveled to Durgapur to study medicine at IQ City Medical College. On October 10, she and a friend left Shivapur College for dinner when a group of men reportedly attacked them. It is said that the survivor was raped in a wooded area.
Investigating the Friend’s Role
The survivor’s father named the friend in his police report, saying that he “misled her and took her to a vacant place under false pretenses.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Sunil Kumar Choudhary, the Asansol-Durgapur Commissioner of Police, said that five persons had already been taken into custody. It was established that these people were at the scene of the crime, and the survivor’s stolen cell phone had been found.
The commissioner said that, based on the technical and scientific evidence gathered and the survivor’s statement, only one individual conducted the sexual assault. The other accused person’s role is currently being looked into.
Choudhary kept saying that the friend’s specific role was “not beyond doubt,” saying:
“The friend of the woman, who was also there when it happened… his role is also not clear. We are also looking at what he did. We had looked at him a few times… He is still being examined.
Police confirmed the friend’s arrest later that night. Officials said that he had been questioned several times at the crime scene before he was arrested.
Investigation still going on
The police are still looking into the roles of all six accused. The police have found evidence and are using technical and scientific methods to figure out how much each person was involved in the crime.
The survivor and her friend had merely gone out for dinner that night, which made the case quite sensitive and closely watched by the police.
