In a meticulously executed operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a smuggling attempt at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, seizing 3 kg of gold valued at approximately ₹2.35 crore. The gold was ingeniously concealed within the piston cavities of two mini air compressors, according to a government release on Wednesday.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials detained an Indian national arriving from Bangkok. Following the seizure, the individual was arrested under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Strong Anti-Smuggling Measures
The operation highlights the DRI’s continued success in combating gold smuggling. In 2024 alone, the agency has seized over 93 kg of gold, valued at approximately ₹66 crore, at Ahmedabad and Surat International Airports.
Officials noted the innovative methods employed by smugglers and reiterated the agency’s commitment to remaining vigilant. “DRI is determined to foil smuggling attempts and address the evolving tactics used for illegal trade,” the release stated.
The incident underscores the critical role of intelligence and swift action in maintaining the integrity of India’s borders and financial systems.
Background:
