Srirangapatna (Karnataka) [India]: Dr. Subbanna Ayyappan, an acclaimed agricultural and fisheries scientist and recipient of the Padma Shri award, was found dead in the Cauvery River near Sai Ashram in Srirangapatna, Karnataka, according to police officials. He was 70 years old.
Dr. Ayyappan had been missing since May 7, with his last known location being his home in Vishweshwara Nagar industrial area of Mysuru, where he lived with his wife. After he failed to return home for three days, his family lodged a missing person complaint at Vidyaranapuram police station.
His scooter was discovered abandoned on the riverbank, leading to fears of foul play or self-harm. On Saturday evening, police were alerted about a floating body in the river, and upon retrieval, it was identified as Dr. Ayyappan.
Police Investigation Underway
While a preliminary enquiry suggests the possibility of suicide, law enforcement officials have not confirmed the cause of death.
“Proper investigation is necessary to determine the actual cause,” a police officer stated.
The Srirangapatna police have registered a case and are conducting a detailed inquiry.
Legacy of Dr. Subbanna Ayyappan
Dr. Ayyappan had an illustrious career in fisheries and agricultural sciences, playing a pivotal role in India’s Blue Revolution, which significantly advanced aquaculture and inland fisheries in the country.
He held several top positions, including:
- Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
- Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE)
- Director, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA)
His scientific leadership and innovations earned him the Padma Shri in 2022.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who are reportedly in deep shock.
