Delhi Police Arrest Man In Online Sextortion Case Involving College Student

The Cyber West Police Station has apprehended Tushar Bisht, 23, in connection with a sextortion case involving a Delhi University student. The victim, a second-year college student, reported the case on December 13 after being blackmailed and coerced into making payments.

The Modus Operandi

The accused allegedly used a virtual international mobile number obtained through an application to create fake profiles on various social media and dating platforms, including Bumble and Snapchat. Posing as a US-based freelance model using photos of a Brazilian model, Bisht lured young women aged 18–30 into engaging with him online.

Once trust was established, he convinced victims to share private photographs and videos via platforms like Snapchat and WhatsApp. Bisht saved these explicit materials using screen recording. He then demanded money from the victims under the threat of leaking their private content online or selling it to third parties.

The Case Details

In January 2024, the victim connected with Bisht on Bumble, where he introduced himself as a US-based model temporarily in India for work. After sharing private content, the victim asked to meet him in person several times, but he always refused. Later, Bisht used her private video to extort money, threatening to leak it online if she didn’t comply.

Under pressure, the victim made a small payment, explaining that she was a student with limited financial resources. Despite receiving the money, Bisht continued his demands, leading the victim to confide in her family and file a police complaint.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Following the complaint, the Cyber West Police swiftly identified the accused as Tushar Bisht, a resident of Shakarpur, East Delhi. A raid was conducted in the area, resulting in his arrest.

During interrogation, Bisht revealed he had been operating the scheme for two years, storing private images and videos of hundreds of women on his phone. Initially, his actions were motivated by personal amusement, but he later turned to extortion for financial gain.

Background of the Accused

  • Name: Tushar Bisht
  • Age: 23
  • Education: BBA graduate
  • Occupation: Technical recruiter in a Noida-based private company for three years
  • Family: Middle-class background, with a private driver father, homemaker mother, and sister working in Gurugram

Police stated that Bisht’s activities were driven by greed and a desire to romantically connect with young women.

Official Statement

DCP West, Vichitra Veer, commented, “The accused used advanced methods to project a false identity and manipulated victims using fake profiles. This arrest highlights our commitment to tackling cybercrime and protecting vulnerable individuals.”

Legal Proceedings

Bisht faces charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the content stored on his devices to identify additional victims.

The police urge the public to exercise caution while sharing personal information online and report any suspicious activities immediately.
