Washington, DC [US], July 2: Rapper and singer Doja Cat has revealed details about her upcoming album, Vie, which will lean heavily into pop music despite her past comments about moving away from the genre, reported People.
The Grammy-winning artist acknowledged the shift, saying, “I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project. I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that — it’s popular.”
She also discussed how pop music is often misunderstood. “It starts to become a thing viewed like a sport by people who enjoy it but don’t respect it for what it is — just music,” she noted, adding that some people see pop as “some kind of football for girls and gays.”
As for the concept of Vie, Doja Cat shared that it revolves around themes of love, romance, sex, and relationship dynamics — including relationships with oneself. Despite its pop foundation, she confirmed that the album will feature significant rap elements: “I have a lot more knowledge of how to use my voice as an instrument, more than I ever have in my life.”
Doja Cat emphasized her growing attention to production details, saying, “I want to focus more on: how does the mix sound? Do I even need these instruments here? Do I need to recut this verse? It’s how things sound that makes the music worth listening to.”
Reflecting on potential reception, she added, “If for any reason a project of mine does a little less good than the last one, I don’t want to be upset. I want to embrace that.”
Vie is expected to be released later this year.
