Dehradun: A terrible case of alleged medical malpractice has come to light in Dehradun, where a 26-year-old lady died after physicians apparently left a bandage inside her tummy after a cesarean delivery. Because of the event, the authorities have started a formal inquiry.
The news agency PTI said on Wednesday that officials have set up a four-member team led by Dehradun Chief Medical Officer Manoj Sharma to look into the event.
Jyoti Pal, the victim, gave birth to a son at the Eye and Mother Care Centre, a private hospital in Dehradun, in January of this year. In his complaint, her husband, Prajjwal Pal, said that doctors left a surgical bandage inside her abdomen during the C-section and sewed her up. This caused a serious infection that eventually killed her.
What the husband said and what the doctors found
Prajjwal said that Jyoti seemed to be getting well after giving birth at first. But within a few days, she started to have severe stomach ache.
The lawsuit said, “A few days later, Jyoti started having stomach pain, and she was taken to the same hospital, but doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong.”
Jyoti was taken to a different hospital as her health got worse. Doctors were shocked to find a bandage still within her stomach, which had caused a bad stomach infection. Even many people tried to save her, Jyoti died from the virus not long after.
Investigation by the committee is going on
Manoj Sharma, the Chief Medical Officer, said that a full inquiry is going on. The committee will talk to the hospital staff, look at medical documents, and go over the steps taken during Jyoti’s cesarean delivery.
Officials have promised that harsh action will be taken if negligence is found.
Cases of Medical Negligence Like This in India
This isn’t the only time this has happened. In the past few years, there have been reports from all over India of foreign items being left within patients after surgery.
Meerut, Uttar Pradesh (March 2025): A doctor was charged with putting a bunch of cotton inside a woman’s stomach after a C-section at Sirohi Nursing Home in 2018. Dr. Shikha Jain was sued after Rajni Sharma, the victim, said she was in pain all the time.
Puttur, Karnataka (February 2025): A woman had to have emergency surgery when a surgical mop was found in her stomach. It was said to have been left there during a cesarean operation in November 2024.
These kinds of things show how important it is for private hospitals to strictly follow surgical safety rules and be held accountable to avoid catastrophes that may have been avoided.
