Doctor Who Had Sex With Nurse During Surgery Avoids Medical Ban

A doctor at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, Dr. Suhail Anjum, has avoided a ban from practicing medicine despite a medical tribunal finding he engaged in serious misconduct. According to a BBC report, the 44-year-old anaesthetist left a patient under anesthesia on an operating table on September 16, 2023, to have sex with a nurse in another room.

The incident came to light when a colleague discovered Dr. Anjum in a “compromising position” with a nurse, referred to as Nurse C, in a separate operating theatre. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing revealed that another nurse saw Nurse C with her “trousers around her knee area with her underwear on display” while Dr. Anjum, a married father of three, was seen “tying up the cord of his trousers.”

Dr. Anjum had reportedly gone to the bathroom, instructing another nurse to monitor the male patient he was responsible for. Instead, he engaged in sexual activity with Nurse C, putting his own interests before his patient’s and his colleagues.

The tribunal’s chairwoman, Rebecca Miller, acknowledged that Dr. Anjum’s actions were “significant enough to amount to misconduct that was serious.” She stated that the incident “had the potential to distract Dr. Anjum… and he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient’s care.”

Despite the severity of the offense, the tribunal ruled that a ban was not necessary. The hearing found that the doctor’s actions did not cause any harm to the patient. Miller added that the public finding of “serious misconduct” would weigh heavily on Dr. Anjum, and she was confident that he was determined not to repeat the mistake.

“The tribunal was satisfied that this public finding of serious misconduct was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession and proper professional standards, and that there was not a necessity to make a finding of impaired fitness to practise for that purpose,” Miller was quoted as saying.

The tribunal is still considering whether to issue an official warning on Dr. Anjum’s registration.
