Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday sought to clear the air surrounding his recent “what option do I have” comment, amid mounting speculation about a leadership tussle within the Karnataka Congress. Shivakumar reaffirmed his loyalty to the party leadership and expressed his commitment to working towards a Congress victory in the 2028 state assembly elections.
“I have to go by my party. My party is important. My leadership’s decision is important. We have an aim to bring 2028 (state assembly elections), we will work for that,” ANI quoted Shivakumar as saying.
His statement came after murmurs of internal discord in the Congress state unit, which he dismissed as speculation, reiterating his support for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
“What option do I have? I have to stand by him and support him. I don’t have any objection to it…” Shivakumar had said earlier, sparking commentary on possible rifts within the party.
Siddaramaiah Calls BJP’s Rift Claims “Lies”
Responding to opposition attacks and media speculation, CM Siddaramaiah asserted that there is no infighting in the Congress, and said the BJP is fabricating stories.
“What the BJP says is only lies. They are known for lies. Doesn’t matter whether they believe it or not, we are all together,” Siddaramaiah said.
He further confirmed that his government will complete the full five-year term, dismissing any possibility of a leadership change.
The CM also clarified the context of the latest cabinet meeting held in Bengaluru, explaining that it is part of a planned series of divisional meetings across Karnataka.
“We did cabinet meetings in the western region. Today in Bengaluru division. We will hold one in Belagavi and are discussing one in Vijayapura,” he said.
As both leaders reaffirm their unity and commitment to Congress’ goals, the party looks to keep internal challenges in check and focus on maintaining public trust ahead of the 2028 electoral battle.
