Disney Confirms ‘Coco 2’ In The Works, Scheduled For 2029 Release

Washington [US], March 21: Disney has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved animated film Coco is in development, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2029. The exciting news was shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Though Coco 2 is still in its early stages, the announcement has sparked widespread anticipation among fans. Iger expressed enthusiasm about the sequel, saying, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon.”

The sequel will bring back the key members of the creative team from the original Coco, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, known for his work on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, will produce the film.

Released in 2017, Coco quickly became a classic, receiving widespread acclaim for its stunning animation, rich cultural storytelling, and unforgettable music. The film tells the story of Miguel, a 12-year-old boy with a passion for music, who finds himself in the Land of the Dead on a journey to discover his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, and convince his family to let him pursue his musical dreams.

‘Coco’ won numerous prestigious awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me,” composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. It also earned a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated, a BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and several Critics’ Choice Awards.

In addition to Coco 2, Disney is working on a Coco-themed ride-through attraction for Disney California Adventure, further expanding the Coco franchise’s legacy.
