Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 15: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has sharply criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the tragic death of a 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha. Pradhan accused Gandhi of exploiting a sensitive issue for “cheap politics” and demanded a public apology.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Pradhan condemned Gandhi’s statement, which had blamed the BJP-led system for the student’s death.
“The cheap politics played by Rahul Gandhi and Congress on the tragic incident involving Odisha’s daughter is extremely unfortunate. Turning a serious and sensitive matter into a political weapon reflects Rahul Gandhi’s petty mindset,” Pradhan wrote.
He asserted that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have always prioritised women’s safety and justice, and promised that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
“This is not the time for cheap politics but for ensuring justice for the victim’s family. Rahul Gandhi should immediately apologise to the victim’s family for his irresponsible statement,” Pradhan added.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier described the incident as an “organised murder by the BJP’s system.” In his post on X, Gandhi alleged that the student, who died after setting herself on fire due to prolonged sexual harassment, had been ignored and humiliated by authorities meant to protect her.
“That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment, but instead of receiving justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. The BJP’s system shielded the accused and forced her to take the extreme step,” Gandhi wrote.
He further criticised PM Modi’s silence on the issue, saying:
“Whether in Odisha or Manipur, the daughters of the nation are burning, breaking, and dying. And you? You remain silent. India’s daughters need safety and justice, not silence.”
The student succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after battling for 60 hours. Hospital authorities confirmed she had been referred from Balasore District Headquarters Hospital after attempting self-immolation. The victim had earlier filed a complaint against the Head of Department at her college, citing prolonged harassment. Despite her efforts to seek justice, no action was taken, leading to the tragic outcome.
