“Dharma is Our Driver”: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Outlines India’s Path to Becoming Vishwaguru

In a significant spiritual and cultural address in Mumbai on Sunday, January 18, 2026, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat emphasized that Dharma is the fundamental driving force of the universe.

Speaking at the ‘Vihar Sevak Urja Milan’—a gathering of volunteers who serve Jain monks during their travels (Vihars)—Bhagwat articulated a vision of India (Bharatvarsha) as a Vishwaguru (world teacher) rooted in spiritual discipline.

Key Highlights of the Address

Bhagwat used metaphorical language to explain the importance of ethical living and national identity:

  • The “Vehicle” of Dharma: He stated that those who travel in a “vehicle” driven by Dharma are protected from “accidents” (moral or spiritual failures).
  • Secular State vs. Dharmic Society: Bhagwat made a clear distinction between governance and existence, noting that while a state can be secular, no living or non-living being can exist without Dharma.
  • Inherent Nature: He defined Dharma as the “inherent nature” of things—citing that water’s Dharma is to flow and fire’s Dharma is to burn.
  • Call for Social Equality: In a significant push for social reform, he urged the audience to erase the caste system from their minds, suggesting that if done honestly, discrimination would vanish within 10–12 years.
  • Respect for Saints: He reminded the cadre that they are doing “God’s work” but are “not God,” emphasizing the duty to protect and respect saints who uphold the truth.

Context: The Mumbai Visit (January 2026)

The speech comes at a time of high political and social activity in Maharashtra:

  • BMC Elections 2026: Bhagwat’s visit follows the major Mahayuti victory in the Mumbai civic polls held earlier this week (Jan 14–16).
  • Vrindavan Visit: Just days prior, he attended the Sanatan Culture Festival in Mathura, where he similarly advocated for Hindu unity and the rejection of all forms of discrimination.
