Cannes [France], May 21: Actor Dhanush is set to take on the role of one of India’s most revered figures, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in an upcoming biopic officially announced at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The film aims to chronicle the remarkable life of the 11th President of India, popularly known as the “Missile Man of India.”
Directed by Om Raut, best known for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, the film is currently in production. The screenplay is being penned by Saiwyn Quadras, the acclaimed writer behind Neerja, Maidaan, and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran.
Speaking about the project, Raut shared, “In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was known for the power of education, excellence, and indigenous innovation. To bring his story to the screen is both an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. His life is a lesson that is bound to connect with people no matter who they are and where they come from.”
The biopic, according to a press release, will go beyond political biography. It will delve into the man behind India’s missile programs and presidency—the poet, the teacher, the dreamer—highlighting Kalam’s ability to blend science with spirituality. The film is envisioned as a profound exploration of leadership, nation-building, and the enduring impact of a visionary.
Producers Abhishek Agarwal and Bhushan Kumar also expressed their emotional connection to the project.
“We are excited to bring the epic life of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to the big screen. This is an emotional moment for us,” said Agarwal.
“Dr. Kalam’s story continues to inspire millions across generations. This film is more than a tribute—it’s a celebration of how dreams, dedication, and humility can shape a nation’s destiny,” added Bhushan Kumar.
While further details about the film are currently under wraps, anticipation is already high for what promises to be a compelling portrayal of one of India’s most inspiring figures.
The film is produced by Abhishek Agarwal, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara.
