Despite High Calcium Intake, India Faces Rising Bone Health Crisis: Luke Coutinho Explains

Despite being one of the world’s highest consumers of dairy products, calcium tablets and vitamin D supplements, India continues to witness alarming levels of osteoporosis, osteopenia and weakening bone health. This paradox has raised a key question — is calcium alone really enough to build strong bones?

Lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho believes the answer is no. In a detailed post, he explained that bone strength depends on a combination of nutrients, lifestyle habits and overall body health — not just supplements.

Bones Need More Than Just Calcium

Bones are not just made of calcium,” Coutinho said, emphasising that bones are a complex living structure requiring multiple nutrients to function optimally.

One of the most critical, yet often ignored nutrients, he said, is Vitamin K2. Without it, calcium may get deposited in the arteries, joints and soft tissues instead of strengthening bones.

“You don’t want calcium in your arteries or tissues. You want it in your bones. K2 ensures that calcium is directed to where it belongs,” he explained.

Magnesium, Protein, Sleep and Strength Training Matter

Coutinho highlighted that magnesium plays a crucial role in activating Vitamin D3 in the body. He said an ideal “bone-support system” should include:
✔️ Calcium
✔️ Vitamin D3
✔️ Vitamin K2
✔️ Magnesium
✔️ Boron

These nutrients can come from food or supplementation, depending on individual needs.

He also stressed that bone health is lifestyle-driven, not pill-driven.
Bones respond to daily signals,” he said, noting that sunlight regulates hormones, movement improves mechanical load, protein supports repair, while emotional stability reduces stress-related damage.

Strength training, he said, is one of the most powerful protectors of bone health.

“The more muscle you challenge, the stronger your bones — even as you age gracefully,” he added.

Gut Health, Hydration and Posture Play Hidden Roles

Many people experiencing stiffness, recurring injuries or inflammation may actually be suffering due to poor circulation, inactivity or nutrient absorption issues, he said.

Coutinho stressed that gut health is vital because poor digestion prevents essential minerals from reaching the bones. He added that hydration keeps tissues healthy, while posture — how one sits, stands, bends and lifts daily — shapes structural alignment and long-term bone stability.

Meanwhile, deep sleep and disciplined sleep patterns support bone repair and regulate bone turnover cycles.
