A 4.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi and surrounding areas early Monday morning, prompting prayers for everyone’s safety from political leaders. The tremor, which struck at 5:36 AM, sent residents rushing out of their homes in panic.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, resharrowing Delhi’s caretaker CM Atishi’s message on X, expressed his concern for public safety, saying, “I pray for the safety of everyone.” Atishi also took to social media to pray for the safety of citizens, stating, “A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, urging people in the affected areas to stay calm. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km, 9 km east of New Delhi. The tremors were felt across the National Capital Region, including Ghaziabad and parts of Delhi. A passenger at New Delhi railway station described the experience, saying, “I was in the waiting lounge. All rushed out from there. It felt as if some bridge had collapsed…” A Ghaziabad resident added, “The tremors were so strong. I have never felt like this ever before. The entire building was shaking.”
As authorities monitor the situation closely, residents are advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
