Delhi Assembly Speaker Writes To Atishi Over ‘Faansi Ghar’ Remark, Asks For Evidence Before Privileges Panel

Vijender Gupta, Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, has written to Leader of Opposition Atishi regarding her recent comments about an alleged “Faansi Ghar” (gallows room) inside the Assembly premises.

In his letter issued on Thursday, the Speaker said that if there is any evidence to support the claim, it should be presented before the Assembly’s Privileges Committee rather than discussed publicly through the media.

Gupta noted that making such allegations during press briefings could influence the committee’s proceedings, which is currently examining the issue.

Speaker Criticises Public Statements On Ongoing Inquiry

In the letter, Gupta criticised the Leader of Opposition for making what he described as unsubstantiated statements during a press briefing. He said such comments could undermine the independent and non-partisan functioning of the Assembly’s Committee of Privileges.

The Speaker stressed that if the claim regarding the existence of a “Faansi Ghar” within the Assembly building is genuine, the evidence must be formally submitted during the committee’s inquiry.

He also reminded Atishi that the purpose of the summons issued to several political leaders is precisely to allow them to present such proof before the panel.

Kejriwal, Sisodia Among Leaders Asked To Submit Proof

Gupta specifically asked Atishi to advise senior leaders including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Ram Niwas Goel and Rakhi Birla to present any evidence when they appear before the Privileges Committee.

The four leaders have been summoned as part of the inquiry into the matter.

Controversy Began After Atishi’s Claim

The controversy erupted after Atishi stated during a press briefing that a “Faansi Ghar” existed inside the Assembly complex. Following the statement, the Speaker said that such claims must be supported with documentary proof before the committee examining the issue.

He also emphasised that political remarks should not interfere with the functioning of legislative committees.

According to Gupta, as Leader of the Opposition, Atishi should refrain from making allegations in the media while the matter is under review by a House panel.

Leaders To Appear Before Committee On March 6

The Speaker’s letter comes a day before the scheduled appearance of the four leaders before the Privileges Committee on March 6, where they are expected to respond to questions as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The committee will review any evidence presented and determine the next course of action regarding the allegations.
