Delhi Reels Under Severe Waterlogging After Early Morning Thunderstorm

Heavy rains cause chaos in Delhi; IMD issues red alert for strong winds and thunderstorms.

New Delhi [India], May 25: Severe waterlogging was reported across parts of Delhi early Sunday after heavy rains and a fierce thunderstorm lashed the national capital. Areas such as Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and near Delhi Airport Terminal 1 were particularly hard hit, with visuals from Minto Road showing cars submerged under floodwaters.

The deluge was accompanied by gusty winds and frequent lightning, causing tree uprooting and damage to property. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a red alert on Saturday, warning residents of severe weather activity over the weekend. The alert, a part of the IMD’s Nowcast warning, cited an approaching thunderstorm cell from the west/northwest likely to impact Delhi and nearby areas.

“Residents are advised to avoid open spaces and unstable structures and remain indoors,” the IMD cautioned. The strong winds, with speeds reaching 40-60 kmph or more, were expected to break tree branches and cause moderate damage to crops like bananas and papaya.

The IMD also predicted that the dust storm accompanying the thunderstorm could pose further challenges to Delhi residents. “These weather conditions can result in dust storms and falling dry tree limbs in some areas,” the IMD added.

Meanwhile, visuals from other parts of Haryana, including Jhajjar, also showed streets submerged after heavy rainfall and thunderstorms swept through the region.

This fresh spell of intense weather comes days after a dust storm triggered by a cloud mass moving from North Delhi towards the south-southeast battered the capital last Wednesday. Winds had gusted up to 70 kmph, accompanied by light rainfall and hail, disrupting power in multiple parts of the city.
