New Delhi [India], June 1: The national capital witnessed sudden rainfall and strong winds on Sunday, offering much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. The downpour affected southern parts of Delhi, accompanied by gusty winds, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The showers were triggered by an east-southeastward-moving cloud cluster, which brought momentary weather relief and lowered surface temperatures.
Delhi Recorded High Temperatures Earlier in the Day
Before the rains, Delhi had seen intense heat in the morning hours. As per IMD data, major areas recorded the following maximum temperatures:
- Safdarjung: 39.7°C
- Ayanagar: 39.5°C
- Lodhi Road: 39.4°C
- Palam: 39.1°C
IMD Issues Thunderstorm and Squall Warnings for June 2–3
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls for June 2 and 3 across the capital. The weather office warns that wind speeds may reach up to 80 km/h, potentially impacting normal activities and infrastructure.
The nowcast alert covers eight districts of Delhi:
- South
- South East
- New Delhi
- East
- Central
- Shahdara
- North East
- North
Meanwhile, South West, West, and North West districts have been advised to expect light rain, thunderstorm, and lightning.
Earlier Rains in May Signaled Changing Weather Patterns
On May 29, light showers and overcast skies were reported in various parts of Delhi. Areas like Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Marg saw light rain as clouds blanketed the city. A yellow alert had also been issued then, signaling thunderstorm and lightning possibilities.
Monsoon Advances in Eastern India; Assam Sees Flood-like Conditions
The IMD also reported that the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into:
- More parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha
- Remaining northeastern states
- Parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal
- Entire Sikkim
Following the monsoon’s arrival, Assam witnessed heavy rainfall, flood-like situations, and landslides. IMD forecasts continued inclement weather with extremely heavy rainfall across western and southern Assam over the next few days.
