Delhi Postpones Launch Of Electric Buses Under DEVI Scheme Amid National Mourning For Pope Francis

New Delhi [India], April 22: The Delhi government has postponed the launch of 330 new electric buses under the Dedicated Electric Vehicle Integration (DEVI) scheme in light of the national mourning declared by the Government of India following the passing of Pope Francis. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared the update on Tuesday via a post on X.

“Dear Delhiites. Due to the national mourning declared by the Government of India on the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, the launch of electric buses under the DEVI scheme has been postponed. The new date will be announced soon,” she wrote.

Earlier, on the occasion of Earth Day, CM Gupta had highlighted the significance of the initiative. “On this #EarthDay, we are taking a transformative step towards a greener future with the launch of 330 new electric buses under the #DEVI initiative,” she posted. She described it as a step to make Delhi’s transport cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for future generations.

Meanwhile, the Kerala government also declared a three-day state mourning. Two days will be observed on April 22 and 23, and the third day will coincide with the Pope’s funeral, which will be announced later. During this period, the national flag will fly at half-mast, and there will be no official entertainment.

District collectors have been instructed to ensure proper observance of mourning protocols, including flying the flag at half-mast wherever it is normally displayed.

Pope Francis, aged 88, passed away on April 21 at his residence in the Vatican. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a nationwide notification declaring April 22 and 23, and the Pope’s funeral day as national mourning.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the Pope as “a beacon of compassion” and lauded his efforts for the poor and marginalized. “Pope Francis’ legacy will inspire generations striving for justice and equality,” he said in a tribute.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid his respects, noting the Pope’s humility, compassion, and deep commitment to serving the underprivileged. “Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world,” the Prime Minister posted.
