Delhi Police Introduces Merit-Based Exam For SHO Appointments, A First In Its History

In a significant reform aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency, Delhi Police is introducing a merit-based examination for the appointment of Station House Officers (SHOs) for the first time in its history. Previously, SHO postings were made based on seniority and experience, but this new system aims to create a more transparent and competitive process.

The Delhi Police will conduct an exam specifically for Cyber Police Stations, which are critical in tackling the growing issue of digital crimes. A total of 122 police inspectors have applied for 15 available positions as Cyber SHOs, making this a highly competitive selection process. The exam is scheduled for March 18 at the Delhi Police Academy in Wazirabad.

With cyber threats on the rise, the Delhi Police is keen to recruit the best-qualified officers to lead its efforts in combating cybercrimes. Those selected will manage cybercrime investigations, digital forensics, and cybersecurity enforcement.

“The competition is tough–only 15 will make it,” said an inspector from West Delhi. “Balancing daily police duties with exam preparation is exhausting, but we know the importance of this role,” he added.

The exam syllabus is comprehensive, covering key laws and policing acts such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), Cybercrime and IT skills, NDPS Act, POCSO Act, JJ Act, Arms Act, Delhi Police Act, Delhi Excise Act, Companies Act, and more. The exam will feature a mix of multiple-choice and descriptive questions, testing candidates’ legal knowledge, investigative skills, and decision-making abilities.

This move has been hailed as a game-changer for the Delhi Police. Senior officials believe that the merit-based selection process will ensure that only the most capable officers are entrusted with leadership roles.

“This step will sharpen investigation skills and raise policing standards,” said a senior officer on the condition of anonymity. “It’s a transparent, fair, and competitive way to appoint SHOs—something that was long overdue.”

As the exam date approaches, police stations across Delhi are abuzz with anticipation. Inspectors are working hard to prepare, burning the midnight oil and discussing strategies with colleagues.

“We’ve put in our best efforts—now, it’s all in God’s hands,” said an inspector from Rohini.

The government is considering expanding this exam-based process for SHO appointments in all police stations in the future, aiming for greater transparency.

With all eyes on March 18, the historic exam will set a precedent for future SHO appointments and could revolutionize the way leadership roles are assigned within the Delhi Police.
