Delhi Mayor Compares Okhla Landfill to Pakistan, Assures Cleanup and Beautification by 2028

New Delhi [India] : Delhi Mayor and BJP leader Raja Iqbal Singh sparked controversy on Thursday during his inspection of the Okhla landfill site, where he likened the garbage heap to Pakistan, stating, “They spread terrorism, and it spreads filth.”

During the visit, Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating the landfill and beautifying the area.
“We had promised cleanliness to the people of Delhi. Soon, this landfill will be removed. These landfills and their foul stench have made life unbearable for nearby residents. Once cleared, a park will be developed here,” the Mayor said.

Singh was joined by Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri during the inspection.

Minister Sirsa elaborated on the government’s roadmap, stating that by October 2025, 20 lakh metric tonnes of legacy garbage would be cleared from the Okhla site.
“Just like dinosaurs went extinct, these landfills will also disappear. This is part of PM Modi’s vision, which CM Rekha Gupta is implementing. By 2028, all garbage mountains in Delhi will be eliminated,” Sirsa told ANI.

Echoing the commitment, MP Bidhuri said that resolving the landfill issue was a key priority for South Delhi.
“This has been the biggest problem in my Lok Sabha constituency. I’m glad to hear from municipal officials that before 2026, this landfill will be cleared and transformed into a green space—fulfilling the vision of PM Modi and CM Rekha Gupta,” he said.

The Okhla landfill is one of Delhi’s major waste sites and has long been a source of pollution and health concerns for residents in surrounding areas.
