Delhi High Court Appoints Two Additional Judges, Strength Rises To 37

New Delhi [India], January 8: Two additional judges, Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, were sworn in at the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, increasing the total number of judges to 37. The court, however, continues to operate with a vacancy, as its authorized strength is 60.

Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bhakru administered the oath during a ceremony attended by fellow judges and lawyers. The Centre had officially notified their appointments on January 6, 2024. The Ministry of Law and Justice, under the Union of India, confirmed the appointments of both advocates as judges. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the announcement on social media, wishing the new judges success.

The appointments of two other recommended advocates, Shwetasree Majumdar and Tejas Karia, are still awaiting approval from the Centre.

The Supreme Court collegium had recommended several advocates for judicial appointments in Delhi in August 2024. Among these, the Centre has approved the appointment of Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, both of whom have extensive legal careers.

Digpaul brings 31 years of experience across multiple branches of law and has contributed to 42 reported judgments, while Shankar has appeared in 180 reported judgments and has a commendable professional track record. Both were deemed highly competent and suitable for the position following evaluations by the collegium and the Department of Justice.
