Delhi Govt Taking Necessary Steps To Mitigate Waterlogging In Monsoon: CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi [India]: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting above-normal rainfall for the upcoming monsoon, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday visited the Minto Bridge area to assess the capital’s monsoon preparedness, especially concerning urban waterlogging.

🛠️ CM Gupta: “Comprehensive Steps in Place”

During her inspection, CM Gupta stated:

“Waterlogging is a recurring issue at Minto Bridge. This year, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure smooth drainage during the monsoon.”

Gupta also highlighted the deployment of automated pumps that require no manual operators, aimed at quick removal of accumulated rainwater.

🔧 PWD Minister Verma: Drain Clearing & Lighting Underway

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma, accompanying the CM, outlined the action plan based on previous monsoon data:

  • In 2023, 308 waterlogging sites were identified by Delhi Police.
  • In 2024, that number has come down to 194, with most located in PWD-managed zones.
  • Drain clearing, installation of pump stations, and deployment of operators are ongoing.
  • 233 traffic congestion points and 3,088 dark spots have been flagged—lighting and roadwork improvements are in progress.

“The CM has given clear directives to fix waterlogging points before the monsoon arrives,” Verma confirmed.

🏫 School Inspections Also Underway

On Thursday, the Delhi government launched a compliance drive across schools, with 10 institutions receiving notices and the process of de-recognition initiated for serious violations. These inspections were supervised by the District Magistrates, along with officials from the Directorate of Education.

🌦️ IMD Monsoon Forecast: Above-Normal Rainfall Likely in 2025

According to the IMD’s long-range forecast, India is expected to receive above-normal rainfall during the 2025 southwest monsoon:

  • ENSO-neutral conditions prevail, but atmospheric patterns hint at a shift towards La Nina-like behavior.
  • There is a 59% probability that rainfall will exceed 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA).
  • The forecast is based on the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME), known for its accuracy in monsoon prediction.
