New Delhi [India]: The Delhi government has initiated a rigorous inspection drive across multiple schools, under the supervision of the District Magistrate (DM), to address rising concerns related to dummy admissions and neglect of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students. Officials confirmed that 10 schools have already been served notices, and proceedings to de-recognise seriously non-compliant institutions have begun.
The inspections were conducted in coordination with senior academicians and officials from the Directorate of Education, as part of a broader effort to identify and curb malpractice in school admissions and operations.
A key focus of the inspections has been dummy schooling—a growing practice where students are enrolled only on paper and do not physically attend classes, often to focus solely on coaching for competitive examinations. At least 20 schools have reportedly been found engaging in such activities.
This action comes just a day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered stringent measures against private schools arbitrarily increasing fees. The issue was highlighted during a Jan Samvaad held at her residence, where parents voiced their grievances regarding exploitative school policies.
One specific case involved Queen Mary School in Model Town, where parents alleged mental harassment and unjustified fee hikes. Reacting swiftly, the Chief Minister directed the Education Department to take immediate action.
“It is completely unacceptable for any school to mentally harass parents or students, threaten them with expulsion, or increase fees without following due process,” CM Gupta said.
She stressed the government’s resolve to uphold the rights of students and ensure equitable access to modern education.
“Parents of children from some schools are constantly meeting me and telling me their problems. There are rules and laws for this, which are very important to follow. If any school is found violating this, then it will have to bear the consequences. We have issued notices to all the schools against which we are receiving complaints,” she added.
Chief Minister Gupta also reaffirmed that the government would not tolerate any compromise with a child’s future.
“The Delhi Government is committed to providing quality education for all children. We will take strict action against any school found guilty of wrongdoing,” she asserted.
