Delhi Government Clears Free LPG Cylinder Scheme For Poor Families Ahead Of Holi

New Delhi: In a major relief for economically weaker households, the Delhi government has approved a scheme to provide one free LPG cooking gas cylinder to poor families ahead of Holi. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, with ₹300 crore earmarked for the initial rollout, sources told.

The scheme will come into effect from Holi and marks the first implementation of a key promise made by the BJP during the Delhi Assembly elections. In its manifesto, the party had assured a free LPG cylinder for poor households on Holi and Diwali, along with an additional subsidised cylinder priced at ₹500.

Who Is Eligible for the Free LPG Benefit?

According to officials, the scheme will cover economically weaker section (EWS) families holding ration cards in Delhi. These identified beneficiaries will receive financial assistance equivalent to the cost of one LPG cylinder starting this Holi.

However, households should note that no physical LPG cylinder will be delivered as part of the scheme.

Cash Transfer, Not Doorstep Delivery

Instead of supplying cylinders directly, the government has opted for the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) route. Under this system:

  • The cost of one LPG cylinder will be credited
  • Directly into the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries
  • Ahead of the Holi festival

Officials said the DBT model ensures greater transparency and flexibility, allowing families to purchase refills from their existing LPG distributors without needing to change connections or suppliers.

₹300 Crore Approved for First Phase

The cabinet has sanctioned ₹300 crore for the scheme’s initial Holi-linked phase. Officials indicated that future budgetary allocations will depend on the scheme’s reception and subsequent policy decisions.

What About the ₹500 LPG Cylinder Promise?

The BJP’s manifesto also included a promise to provide LPG cylinders at a subsidised rate of ₹500 for poor households. However, officials clarified that no final decision has yet been taken on this component of the proposal.
