Delhi Assembly Elections: Authorities Ramp Up Security Measures With Less Than 24 Hours To Go

With less than 24 hours remaining until the Delhi Assembly elections, authorities have intensified security measures, conducting route marches and thorough checks in sensitive areas across the national capital.

On Monday evening, security forces conducted a flag march in the Govindpuri area, with a similar march taking place in the Hauz Rani area. These actions are part of the comprehensive security plans in preparation for the upcoming polls.

“As there are less than 48 hours left in the polling for the Delhi Assembly election, South district has increased its security. We have started intensive checking. We have conducted route marches in the sensitive and vulnerable areas,” said DCP Chauhan to media.

Earlier, on February 2, Delhi Police’s Southern Range reported record-breaking figures in terms of arrests and case registrations since the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the 2025 Assembly elections.

Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), SK Jain, highlighted that the enforcement actions of the last 24 days had surpassed previous records set during the 2020 Assembly and 2024 Parliamentary elections. Since the MCC came into effect on January 7, 2025, the Southern Range, covering the South and South-East districts, has significantly intensified efforts to curb illicit activities and maintain public safety in line with directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The intensified enforcement drive resulted in substantial seizures, including:

  • 59,062 quarters of liquor,
  • 50.1 kg of Ganja,
  • 1.5 kg of Charas,
  • 0.7 kg of Smack under the NDPS Act,
  • 73 firearms and 152 cartridges, marking a 3.5 times increase compared to the 2024 elections, and
  • Rs 1.22 crore in cash, setting a new record.

Additionally, over 2,447 preventive actions were initiated under the BNSS/CrPC, leading to 1,271 arrests and the deposit of 3,380 licensed arms. Furthermore, 138 cases were registered under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property (DPDP) Act, 2007.

To ensure law and order, 39 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in sensitive areas. These units have conducted synchronized flag marches, area domination exercises, and Quick Response Team (QRT) operations. At inter-state borders, vehicle and individual checks have successfully thwarted attempts to smuggle illicit items, including liquor, cash, firearms, and narcotics.

Specialized Flying Squad Teams (FST) and Static Surveillance Teams (SST) have been operating around the clock, leading to the seizure of 3,284 vehicles and the booking of 3,905 individuals for public drinking under the Delhi Excise Act.

In addition to enforcement, the Southern Range has been actively promoting voter awareness through the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program. This initiative includes Nukkad Nataks, Selfie Points, and interactions with Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to boost public confidence and encourage higher voter participation.

With a final push for voter engagement and robust security protocols, Delhi is set to witness an intense election day tomorrow, ensuring a peaceful and smooth process for all participants.
