New Delhi [India], April 8: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a series of infrastructure development projects in Shalimar Bagh on Tuesday, including the inauguration of new roads, sewer lines, and water pipelines aimed at resolving the area’s persistent civic issues.
During her on-ground inspection of multiple sectors and blocks, Gupta engaged with local residents, listened to their grievances, and instructed officials to address concerns without delay. Key representatives from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Public Works Department (PWD), and Delhi Police accompanied the Chief Minister.
Blistering Critique of AAP Governance
Taking a direct swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), CM Gupta criticised the previous administration for failing to deliver, despite substantial financial allocations:
“Despite a hefty budget, nothing has been done. People continue to suffer from water shortages and poor sewer systems. Where did the money go?” she questioned.
Highlighting the alarming state of basic infrastructure, Gupta remarked,
“We are essentially starting from scratch in Delhi because the previous government failed to act.”
Traffic Congestion and Vendor Relocation
One key issue addressed during the visit was the traffic congestion in Shalimar Bagh caused by unregulated street vendors. Gupta announced the relocation of vendors to a designated area on Shamshan Road, ensuring smoother traffic flow and better access for emergency services.
“This move helps reduce traffic issues and ensures ambulances and fire brigades can access the area more efficiently,” she said.
The relocated vendors expressed appreciation, citing improved facilities such as lighting, water supply, and proper footpaths in the new zone.
Promises for Slum-Dwellers: “Achhe Din Begins Now”
In a strong commitment to uplift Delhi’s urban poor, the Chief Minister assured slum residents that no jhuggi (slum dwelling) will be demolished, and instead, living conditions will be improved:
“We are starting work on drainage systems, public washrooms, and children’s play areas. This is the beginning of ‘Achhe Din’ for slum-dwellers.”
Gupta also confirmed that Rs 700 crore allocated to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) will now be actively used for slum development.
“52,000 flats built over 10 years ago will finally be renovated and allocated to slum residents,” she stated.
She accused previous administrations of misleading the public and neglecting the urban poor, asserting that the BJP government under PM Narendra Modi is now delivering on promises of inclusive development.
City-Wide Review and Development Push
On Monday, CM Gupta held a high-level review meeting with District Magistrates from all 11 revenue districts of Delhi. The agenda: to evaluate development progress, address local challenges, and enhance coordination among departments.
This marks a robust start to Rekha Gupta’s term as Chief Minister, with her focus squarely on infrastructure, accountability, and welfare.
