New Delhi [India], April 20: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday inaugurated a fleet of 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers under the Delhi Jal Board, aimed at enhancing transparency and water distribution across the national capital. Gupta announced that residents would now be able to track the location and movement of these tankers using a new tanker mobile application.
Taking a sharp dig at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Gupta alleged widespread corruption and mismanagement in water supply, blaming the existence of a so-called “tanker mafia.”
“In the previous government, there was leakage in the entire system in the name of tanker mafias. There was corruption. Water was meant for the public, but nobody knew where it went,” Gupta told reporters. “Now, these GPS-enabled tankers can be tracked, and every route can be monitored. This is a step towards clean and accountable governance.”
In another development, CM Gupta also addressed the issue of unauthorised and unsafe buildings in Delhi. She stated that strict punishment should be meted out to officials and builders responsible for weak and illegal constructions, which she said have led to fatal accidents.
“It is a very sensitive issue. Officers and builders flouting norms must be punished. All such buildings must be identified and action must be taken. It’s very tragic that people are losing their lives to such negligence,” she said, referring to a recent building collapse in Mustafabad that claimed four lives.
