NEW DELHI— Reports say that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday while she was holding a “Jan Sunvai” (public hearing) at her official home in Civil Lines. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) branch in Delhi said that there was a “mishap” during the weekly meeting where the Chief Minister hears complaints from the people.
The BJP didn’t say much about what happened, but news channels that weren’t validated said that a man who was at the public hearing smacked the Chief Minister. The Delhi Police have arrested one person in connection with the case, and an investigation is going on to find out more.
Virendraa Sachdeva, the head of the Delhi BJP, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “serious breach of security” and urging that those responsible be held accountable.
The opposition also reacted strongly to what happened. Devender Yadav, the head of the Delhi Congress, said that the event was “very unfortunate.” He said he was worried that if the Chief Minister of Delhi isn’t safe, it makes people think about how safe regular people are, especially women. Yadav said, “This incident also shows how unsafe women are.”
The Delhi administration started the Jan Sunvai program to give people a direct way to voice their problems and look for answers. The attack on the Chief Minister during this event has brought attention to the safety of public officials and the safety of the public.
