New Delhi [India]: The death toll in the Mustafabad building collapse in northeast Delhi has climbed to 11, according to a statement by the Delhi Police. The four-storey residential building collapsed early Saturday morning, trapping several people inside.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, and local volunteers launched an extensive operation to search for survivors and retrieve bodies from the debris.
“Among the 10 people who were taken out, four succumbed. Rescue operations are still underway,” the Delhi Police said earlier in the day.
A total of 11 individuals were rescued from the rubble. Of the 11 injured, six have been discharged from local hospitals, while five remain under treatment.
Chief Minister Condoles Loss, Orders Investigation
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed condolences for the victims and ordered a thorough probe into the incident. Taking to social media platform X, she wrote:
“May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss.”
She also assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the collapse.
Ongoing Rescue and Investigation
The cause of the collapse is still being investigated. Initial reports suggest that structural weaknesses in the aging residential building could have led to the tragedy, though official confirmation is awaited.
Authorities are currently assessing whether illegal construction or negligent maintenance may have contributed to the disaster.
