New Delhi (India), February 16: The newly elected Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are scheduled to meet on Monday, February 17, at 3 PM at the Delhi BJP State Office to decide on the party’s Chief Minister (CM) candidate. All BJP MLAs have been informed about the meeting.
The meeting comes after the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, with results announced on February 8. The BJP secured a commanding 48 out of 70 seats, marking a historic return to power in the Delhi Assembly after 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 22 seats, falling short of its previous tally, with prominent leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendra Jain losing their constituencies.
The BJP did not announce a Chief Ministerial face before the elections, and with the current term of the Delhi Assembly ending on February 23, the swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place shortly, possibly on February 18 at the Ramlila ground, according to sources.
Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the position of Delhi CM. Among the frontrunners is Parvesh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi and has become a key figure in the party. Other contenders include Satish Upadhyay, former Delhi BJP president, and Ashish Sood, a prominent Punjabi face of the BJP in the city. Jitendra Mahajan and Vijender Gupta are also being considered, along with Rekha Gupta, former Delhi Mayor and first-time MLA, who could be a potential female candidate.
As the BJP prepares for its return to power in Delhi, all eyes are now on the MLAs’ meeting on February 17 to determine the next Chief Minister of the national capital.
