Delhi Assembly Elections: Paid Holiday Declared for Voters, Security Tightened Ahead of Polling

Authorities urge high voter turnout; UP and Haryana also announce paid leave for employees

New Delhi, February 5: In preparation for the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for Wednesday, a paid holiday has been declared for employees in both government and private sectors, officials confirmed. Neighboring states Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have also announced a paid holiday to facilitate voting in the national capital.

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R Alice Vaz emphasized the importance of voter participation and urged all eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote.

“A paid holiday has been declared for shops and establishments, as well as staff working in government and private sectors. Our neighboring states, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, have also declared a paid holiday. We have communicated this widely and are ensuring its public awareness,” Vaz told.

Encouraging voter turnout, she added, “I request all voters in Delhi to come and cast their vote and be part of this memorable experience.”

CCTV Monitoring and Security Measures in Place

To ensure a free, fair, and transparent election, authorities will monitor all polling stations via CCTV cameras from the Election Commission’s monitoring room in Delhi.

Security measures have been stepped up across the city to prevent any disruption. Special CP DC Srivastava assured that the Delhi Police is fully prepared to conduct smooth polling.

“… All the parties have reached their polling booths. They are setting themselves so that the polling process concludes efficiently tomorrow… Delhi Police have ensured that free and fair elections take place. We have taken action against anyone who has violated the law,” Srivastava told ANI.

Flag March and Border Surveillance Strengthened

A flag march was carried out in Shahpur Jat village under the Hauz Khas police station area to deter any unlawful activities.

DCP South, Ankit Chauhan highlighted intensified patrolling efforts, saying, “As there are less than 12 hours left in the polling for the Delhi Assembly election, we have intensified patrolling in the densely populated areas. We are conducting flag marches. We will not allow any nefarious element to disrupt polling.”

To curb illegal smuggling, illicit liquor distribution, and the use of muscle power, strict border checks have been implemented.

“We are using Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), local police, and home guards. We have created social media cells to monitor posts and respond immediately. We have seized cash worth more than ₹1 crore from the South district, along with a huge amount of illicit liquor. We have also detected two commercial quantities of narcotics,” Chauhan added.

Noida Police Joins Hands with Delhi Police for Border Security

Given Delhi’s proximity to Noida, authorities have also enhanced security at border checkpoints.

Joint CP Law and Order (L&O), Noida, Shiv Hari Meena stated, “Tomorrow, Delhi Assembly polls are to be held… there are 11 points of neighboring border district where checking is being conducted. All the senior officers are also present. This is a joint check with the Delhi Police.”

With polling set to take place across 70 Assembly seats, the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies are working to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process.
