Delhi Assembly Elections 2025: Voting Underway Amid Tight Security

Polling Begins for 70 Assembly Seats; Key Leaders Cast Votes as AAP, BJP, and Congress Battle for Power

New Delhi, February 5: Voting for the 70 Delhi Assembly seats began at 7:00 AM on Wednesday, with citizens turning out to cast their ballots amid tight security. The polling will continue until 6:00 PM, officials confirmed.

Delhi has a total of 1,56,14,000 registered voters, including 83,76,173 men, 72,36,560 women, and 1,267 third-gender voters. The electorate also includes 2,39,905 first-time voters (aged 18-19), 1,09,368 elderly voters (85+), and 79,885 persons with disabilities.

Massive Security Arrangements in Place

To ensure smooth and fair elections, approximately 97,955 personnel and 8,715 volunteers have been deployed. The security setup includes:

  • 220 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)
  • 19,000 Home Guards
  • 35,626 Delhi Police personnel

Additionally, 70 polling stations are exclusively managed by women, while another 70 are operated entirely by persons with disabilities. An additional 70 polling stations have been specially designated to encourage youth participation.

To enhance voter convenience, the AI-based Queue Management System app “Delhi Election – 2025 QMS” has been launched, allowing voters to monitor real-time crowd levels at polling stations. Medical teams and creche facilities have also been set up at various booths.

High-Stakes Battle: AAP vs BJP vs Congress

The elections mark a fierce battle between the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress.

  • AAP, led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is seeking a third consecutive term.
  • BJP, with PM Narendra Modi at the forefront of its campaign, has accused Kejriwal of corruption, misgovernance, and issues related to the Yamuna water crisis.
  • Congress, with leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been targeting AAP, accusing it of “damaging Delhi’s infrastructure.”

CEC Urges Citizens to Vote

Chief Electoral Officer R Alice Vaz urged voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers.

“On the day of voting, February 5th, I urge all voters in Delhi to come out in large numbers and cast their vote. It is our foremost responsibility as citizens to participate in this democratic process,” she said.

Silent Period Controversy & Complaints

The 48-hour silence period leading up to the election was marred by controversy.

  • BJP filed a complaint against AAP, alleging that its workers were causing disturbances across constituencies to influence voters.
  • The BJP accused an AAP worker in Mehrauli of brandishing a weapon in a viral video to create fear among voters.
  • In Haryana, an FIR was registered against Arvind Kejriwal and others under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for their remarks about Yamuna water and the Haryana government.

As Delhi votes today, all eyes are on the fierce electoral battle between AAP, BJP, and Congress, with the results to be declared on February 8.
